Earth Ponies are one of the four tribes of pony. They are set apart from unicorns and pegasi by their very strong connection to the land and animals.

Background

Earth Ponies have been a dominant tribe in Equestria since the First Age. Their tribe has a bright and old culture, which has been expanded and built upon the over the ages. It wasn't until the end of the Third Age that Earth Ponies began to join with the other remaining pony tribes, bringing in a new age of discovery, the Age of Equestria.

History

In the beginning of the Ages, the tribes of Earth Ponies had all ready formed settlements, focused upon farming the land. This was due to Earth ponies tribes figuring out very early how to raise crops and work with livestock animals for food. During the First Age, or the Paleopony Period, the Earth tribe was one of the few tribes that documented their history and culture in writing.

Not much is known of the the Second Age, as during this time most of the records were destroyed. It has been assumed that, with the entire world in chaos, many aspects of Earth Pony culture were lost during this time. It wasn't until the defeat of Discord and the beginning of the the Age of Wandering did writings from the Earth Pony tribes reemerge in greater number.

It was during this age that history shows Earth Ponies retaught themselves how to farm. They also formed a democratic system of government, where each member of the settlements was equal. As the story of Hearth's Warming Eve states, the three tribes would later come together to create a tentative agreement during this time.

Toward the end of the Third Age, dissension grew between the three remaining tribes, which brought about Windigoes, winter spirits that feed off fighting and hatred. With them would come never-ending blizzard, so long as the turmoil between the tribes continued. Sometime during this time, representatives from the three tribes would meet and would eventually join together to establish Equestria. It should be noted that not all pony tribes joined under the banner of Equestria, due to disagreement or due to never being reunited after the fall of Discord. Other lands would be created by these pony tribes. It is no longer clear what tribes the founded of Equestria originally came from.

With the crisis of the Fimbulwinter of Hate averted and the founding of Equestria begun, the Fourth Age would begin. This age is known as the Classical Period, or the Age of Equestria. It was during this time that the Earth Ponies expanded their settlements out more, going wherever food could be grown. Various towns formed from these original settlements, becoming such places as Manehatten and Fillydelphia. Also during this age, Withersford was founded as the center-point for the nation, and was still among the few settlements of the age to see all of the tribes living together.

After the corruption of the original founding place of Equestria, and the creation of the Everfree Forest, Canterlot was renamed the capital of Equestria and Princess Celestia took up the unicorn title of Princess. Though ruled over by a Princess, the democratic process in many of the original Earth Pony settlements still remains strong, and has spread to other towns and villages across Equestria.

Lore

Earth Ponies were among the first of the pony tribes to actively document their own histories and stories in written form. From them, many of the other aspects of the Pony tribes were safe from the chaos of Discord to be rerecorded by future generations. Many records of legendary and famous ponies still remain from previous generations, including such Earth Ponies as Chancellor Puddinghead and Smart Cookie.

Characteristics

The information in this section is more the technical knowledge behind the race. This information is not necessarily things that would be known without proper research. Like all races and species of Equestria, this knowledge is known to vary between its members.

Physical

Earth Ponies share many, if not most of the same traits that both pegasi and unicorns possess. The most prominent difference of a Earth Pony between the others is the fact they lack either horns or wings. However, they make up for this by their immense physical strength.

Lifespan and Birth

The lifespan of an Earth Pony is no longer than any other pony, though there have been cases of a Earth Pony living well over a century.
Earth Pony can come about from any parentage or lineage, as long as an Earth Pony ancestor lies somewhere in either side of the family.

Diet

The diet of an Earth Pony is an herbivorous one, consisting primarily of different vegetable and fruit matter. It is not uncommon for ponies to consume baked goods and mixed drinks, such as juices and teas.

Earth Pony Magic

Like all members of the various pony tribes, Earth Ponies have their own as well. However, it is much more subtle and indirect than that of a unicorn or pegasus as they inherently share an immense connection with the plants, animals, and earth itself. Because of this, an Earth Pony's magic is expressed primarily through their hooves. This has given them the ability to grow almost anything with the greatest of ease, or perform many feats that another type of pony might find impossible to do on their own.

Due to their own connections with the world around them, many Earth Ponies have taken up a life style of manual labor and farm work. Most of the food can generally only be grown by Earth Ponies, making them a vital resource in the welfare of all of Equestrian life. Earth ponies also do most of the manual labor, such as scoring ice and clearing snow. Earth ponies also provide a valuable ability for physical strength, using it to pull rickshaws, carriages, and even trains. Their connection with other animals also allows them to care much more readily and easily for this, though exceptions have been shown by other types of ponies, such as Fluttershy.

Unlike pegasi and unicorns, Earth Ponies do not seem as narrow in what they can accomplish. Due to the nature of their magic, Earth Ponies are perhaps the most versatile of all ponies in what they can do, and are not generally limited by only their special talents around nature. Examples have included Earth Ponies using their innate abilities to become great artists and composers, be it through music, or even baking.

Physical Augmentation

Earth Ponies have the ability to draw out and focus their magic into incredible feats of strength and speed. It is not uncommon for Earth Ponies to uproot stumps from the ground, or move large boulders easily. Some Earth Ponies have been able to utilize this to even greater degrees, removing entire homes from their foundations and carrying them for long distances. An Earth Pony can utilize their own magic to display incredibly bursts of speed, that is unmatched on the ground.
